European SAMBO Championships 2018 was held on 17-21 May in Athens, Greece. This year Athens hosted one of the continental SAMBO tournament bringing together over 200 athletes from 29 countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine.

The 2018 European SAMBO Championships bring together the continent’s leading athletes to battle it out for honours across 27 different categories. After 3 competition days as the results of the tournament 17 countries left the championship with medals.

On 17 May, the Congress took a place which was attended by 11 members of the ESF Executive Committee and 29 national federation members. It considered issues regarding the report of the ESF Executive Committee for the year 2017. There was also a discussion over the ESF schedule for international competitions from 2018 to 2021, as well as changes in ESF membership.

At the start of the meeting, Congress participants observed a moment of silence to commemorate the late ex-president of the SAMBO Federation of Armenia, Levon Hayrapetyan, and international referee Alexei Rybakov who died suddenly last month at the age of 67 during the European Youth and Junior SAMBO Championships in Prague.

At the conclusion of the Congress, a discussion was held regarding the admission of the SAMBO Federation of Iceland as a candidate ESF member.

Also, to maintain FIAS Anti-doping program, FIAS organised special events for coaches and athletes. 40 coaches and national team representatives took a part at Anti-Doping Seminar. 2018 edition of the seminars are linked to the main WADA theme “The rights and responsibilities of the athletes”. After the seminar, the participants passed the test to obtain FIAS Certificates.

As well there was organised WADA Quiz for athletes and entourage. 120 participants decided to check their knowledge. The participants, who answered correct to all questions received special souvenirs form FIAS.

The 2019 European SAMBO Championships are due to take place in Gijón in Spain.
