Asian SAMBO Championships & Asian Youth and Junior SAMBO Championships 2018 was held on 11-13 May in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The tournament was opened by the President of Mongolia Khaltmaagiin Battulga, who in 1983 was World SAMBO Champion. From his interview to journalists: “This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of SAMBO in Mongolia. It is one of the sports that has a long history in our country. Besides, this is also an anniversary tournament for the whole continent – the 25th Asian SAMBO Championships. I was engaged in this martial art by myself and I became world SAMBO champion, and therefore I feel very happy about this event. Mongolian people enjoy SAMBO very much, and they know this sport very well, too.”

This year over 200 athletes arrived at Mongolia to perform and represent their countries. 12 countries were represented at Asian Championship: Brunei, China, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, The Philippines and Turkmenistan.

On the eve of the Championships FIAS has organised the seminar for SAMBO Referees. During these two days, referees of international categories Alexander Larionov and Islom Adylov were teaching the participants from several countries the theoretical parts and assisting them in practice.  Most of participants represented Mongolia. They made a point of using this opportunity for passing the training course of the international level at home. Among his fellow countrymen, Yumursen Amarsanaa, the member of the Mongolian road police, looked especially distinctive due to his uniform.

As well FIAS held a doping free seminar for referees, coaches and team representatives. Deputy Head of International FIAS Department Maxim Khomchenko delivered a report on anti-doping. In addition to the theoretical section, the report also included an interactive part: participants were questioned and for the correct answers they received souvenirs from FIAS. The crowded hall and the activity of the participants confirmed the right choice of the seminar format.

Also, as the part of FIAS Anti-Doping program, during the tournament there was organised WADA Quiz for athletes. Over 250 participants decided to check their knowledge. The participants, who answered correct to all questions received special souvenirs form FIAS.

The 2019 Asian SAMBO Championships are due to take place in Chinese Taipei.
